This is how we met the youngest “Top 10 Outstanding Farmer” in Tai Tung.
A few months ago when we did our motorbike tour around Taiwan, the right rear-view mirror of the motorbike was broken because of an accident. Then we got it repaired in a motorbike shop nearby. Then my husband started to talk to the repairman, who recommended us to his old high school classmate when he knew that we export tea to Hong Kong. “They have been making tea for generations.”
Why not? We immediately went to the tea shop opened by his classmate and finally met Chen Hung Ju, who just got back from the tea farm.
Wow. We ended up meeting one of the Top 10 Outstanding Farmers in Taiwan and had some really nice Red Oolong. I checked. This “Top 10 Outstanding Farmers” recognition is awarded by the Agriculture Department of Taiwan to recognise the hard work and contribution of that farmer. The award is given by the president by hand!
Chen Hung Ju is the 3rd generation of this tea farm. Around 10 years ago when he returned to the farm, the first thing he did was to convert their farm to organic cultivation, which is supported by his father. “Eco-friendly growing is not only good for the tea, but also good for nature, for others and for ourselves.” he said.
The following Red Oolong tea selected by us is the specialty from Tai Tung, which is also the product for participating in the “Top 10 Outstanding Farmer Award”.
“Dongjie Tea Farm” High Mountain Red Oolong
Red Oolong is a specialty tea and the gem in the east part of Taiwan, Taitung City. It’s heavily fermented, withering and roasted. It’s the highest fermented one in the Oolong type. This tea combined the characteristics of black tea (heavily fermented) and Oolong (craftsmanship).
